Its that time of year again and the start of a new year calls for New Year’s Resolutions. In addition to making the usual personal resolutions, all business owners should be reviewing the past year and resolving to make those changes necessary to a successful new year. Changes and improvements in ones business may mean the difference between success or failure, continued ability to thrive versus inability to survive. So, for 2008 make some New Year’s Resolutions for your business which will make a positive difference for your business:
#1- Review your business- where it is and where its going. Dust off that business plan and see how closely you’ve followed it. Update it. Make sure its premises are still valid in this fast changing economy.
#2 –If you don’t have a business plan to review-make one! Contact your local SCORE office or SBDC and let them help you put together a business plan. It’s a great road map for your business and helps you assess whether you are achieving your business goals.
#3-Look at the elements of how you conduct business. Are you using current communication systems, information technology, best business practices? If not, you can be sure your competitors are and you will soon find yourself left behind. To be |

competitive in today’s global market, you need to be current, cutting edge and innovative.
#4-Don’t forget the human capital side of the business, including the way you involve yourself in your business. Are you adding value to the results? Do you have the right team in place to support your planned growth?
#5-Look at the long term, big picture. In addition to examining today’s status of your company look at one year from now, three years from now, or even give to ten years from now. Where do you and your company need to be at those critical points? Include preparation of an exit strategy in your long term thinking.
#6- Are we having fun yet? No amount of money can make up for a satisfying, fulfilling, fun career. If you can’t say you’re having fun as an entrepreneur, maybe its time to turn the business over to someone else.
Don’t wait. Make up your mind that you’re going to examine your business and business practices now and set in motion those improvements which will help you accomplish your business and personal goals. It’s a New Year and time to help your business grow and thrive. Good luck on your New Year’s resolutions-both personal and business! |
