During
Women's History Month, we celebrate women who have inspired us,
women who lead us, and women who persevere. Given Long Island's
vibrant small business economy and the fact that women owned businesses
are the fastest growing segment, we should also celebrate entrepreneurial
women. These are women who start and grow businesses despite obstacles
that would deter many others - things like lack of capital, good
ole boys networks, and a challenging economy. These are women who
start and grow businesses while still chauffeuring the kids to after
school activities, cooking the meals and cleaning the house. These
are women who create successful , thriving businesses employing
millions throughout our nation.
In
addition to celebrating these women entrepreneurs, let us also note,
they need not operate alone - there are numerous resources out there
to help women in business - financing, technical and other resources.
Some of the more helpful are:
- SCORE
- Service Corps Of Retired Executives (not just
the retired white haired guy anymore). Provides mentoring and
counseling. www.score.org
- SBDC's
- Small Business Development Centers to provide
assistance in creating business plans and applying for loans.
www.sba.gov/sbdc
- NAWBO
- National Association of Women Business Owners
- networking and affinity programs for women owned businesses.
www.nawboli.org
- US WCC
- US Womens Chamber of Commerce - networking, training
for women business leaders. www.uswomenschamber.com
- BWE
- Black Women Enterprises - statewide organization
of minority owned businesses providing training and counseling.
516 - 485 - 5900.
- SCWBEC
- Suffolk County Women Business Enterprise Coalition
- group promoting women businesses to do business in Suffolk County.
www.scwbec.org
- LISBAC
- Long Island Small Business Assistance Corp. -
loans up to $10,000 to women owned businesses with individual
free technical assistance and free seminars. www.lidc.org
So,
let us take a moment during Women's History Month to thank our suppliers
and customers who are woman owned, congratulate our female boss/business
owners, and encourage them to keep persevering and helping the economies
of Long Island and our nation.
